Even though the Minnesota Timberwolves swept them out of the first round of the playoffs this year, the Phoenix Suns seem happy to use their superstar core to win it back the next year.
Suns general manager James Jones stated on Friday that there is “no scenario” in which he would move Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal this summer, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.
According to Jones, Durant, Booker, and Beal “aren’t going anywhere.”
KD, Booker, and Beal played together for the first time in the 2023–24 season. Despite finishing as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference with a 49–33 record, they were defeated in the postseason.
In 2021, Phoenix came agonizingly close to winning its first NBA title, but the Milwaukee Bucks defeated them in the Finals. The Suns were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, despite having the best record in the NBA the next season (64-18).
This led the Suns to trade Kevin Durant and T.J. Warren from the Brooklyn Nets during the 2022–2023 season in return for Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks, and a pick swap.
However, injuries limited KD to just eight games during the Suns’ regular season the previous year, and Phoenix lost in the second round of the playoffs once more, which resulted in head coach Monty Williams’ dismissal.
Frank Vogel, who helped the Los Angeles Lakers win their most recent title in 2020, took Williams’ place. Phoenix also made a big trade market splash.
Three-time All-Star Bradley Beal, acquired from the Washington Wizards, joined four-time All-Star Booker and future Hall of Famer Durant.
In the transaction, Phoenix traded for future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul and acquired center Deandre Ayton from another team in a separate three-team trade that included Jusuf Nurkić.
With Nurkić, Grayson Allen, Eric Gordon, and Booker as a supporting cast, there was plenty to admire about the new core of Durant, Booker, and Beal. That effectively left Booker as the only important player remaining from the 2021 Finals squad.
But the Suns were decimated by injuries once more. Playing in 75 games, Durant had his best year since 2018–19, although Beal and Booker missed 29 and 14, respectively.
Despite playing in all four postseason games, Phoenix’s three stars combined for an average of 70.8 points per game; nevertheless, no other player on the club scored more than 8.0 points per game during the series.
Each of Durant, Booker, and Beal is expected to earn over $50 million in salary the next season, so if all three are retained, there won’t be much room for roster adjustments.
Nevertheless, it appears like Jones and his Big 3 are determined to try again, even though their leader will be changing.
After only one season, the Suns fired Vogel and brought in Mike Budenholzer, who helped the Bucks win a championship in 2021, ahead of the Suns.
