LeBron James, the LA Lakers superstar and Ohio native, returned to his hometown on Monday. At Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, James watched his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, play Game 4 of the second round against the Boston Celtics. While doing so, he brought some questionable drinks, which elicited amusing reactions from basketball fans.
James spent 11 seasons with Cleveland, including two stints. He led the franchise to its first NBA title in 2016 before joining the Lakers as a free agent in 2018.
As expected, when the four-time MVP entered the arena, Cavaliers fans gave him a raucous standing ovation. He then took a courtside seat next to his wife, Savannah James.
When fans on X/Twitter saw James’ wine bottle, they joked about the 20-time All-Star showing off his power.
With LeBron James in attendance, the Cavaliers fell short against the Celtics in Game 4. Without star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell (calf) and starting center Jarrett Allen (ribs), they lost 109-102, falling behind 3-1 in their Round 2 series.
During their loss, James was seen leaving the game early, prompting some to question his Cleveland fandom.
Nonetheless, many people noted that James’ appearance occurred at a significant time. The 39-year-old is expected to decline his $51.4 million player option with the Lakers for next season and test free agency this summer.
Thus, he may be putting pressure on LA to take the necessary steps to keep him. It’s unclear whether James would consider another Cleveland reunion, or if he had any ulterior motives on Monday. Nonetheless, Cavaliers fans appear to admire “King James” as much as ever.
