It goes without saying that joining the National Basketball Association (NBA) is a life-changing financial opportunity. Depending on how your job progresses, you may be able to provide for multiple generations of your family.
Of course, NBA rookies aren’t instantly getting large money. It has to start somewhere, and NBA standout Donovan Mitchell’s career began with a $14.3 million (approximately P725 million) rookie deal from the Utah Jazz after being picked 13th overall.
The high-flying guard recently sat down with GQ to talk about how he spent the first million dollars he made in the NBA. A large amount of his initial payday apparently went to obtaining three brand-new cars.
The first was an Audi for his mother. Mitchell does not specify the model he purchased for her, but says it cost roughly $50,000 (P2.5 million).
“I informed her that I was not going to get her. Because she was like, “I would love to get this car.” You know, I was like, “Yeah, maybe in five or six years.” Do you know? When I heard that, I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to start looking for a way to buy this car for her.'”
The next item on the list was a Porsche Panamera for personal usage at $90,000 (P4.5 million). According to Mitchell, he saw the automobile while working out in Los Angeles and knew he wanted to have one.
“When I was working out, I saw it in LA. And I thought, ‘Man, that automobile looks amazing.’ Do you know? Then I received it with the all-black, crimson interior. Some red rims. Also, crimson is my favorite color,” he explained.
Finally, he bought his sister a Jeep Wrangler Sahara for $60,000 (approximately P3 million).
“She has always wanted a Jeep. I was able to purchase her a Jeep Sahara. I tried to trick it up for her, but she said, ‘No, I want it real basic.'”
Other major purchases made with Mitchell’s first million include a downpayment on a house, tuition for his sister, and a significant donation to a nonprofit foundation. Which of the three cars listed above do you believe was his greatest choice?
