After the Los Angeles Lakers wasted another year of LeBron James’ life, the big question now is what King James will do next. The last three years in Los Angeles have been disappointing, and with LeBron owning a player option for next season, many people have speculated about what King James will do this summer.
Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett said he wouldn’t be surprised if LeBron calls his fellow aging superstars and asks them to join him on one team.“If I’m Bron, I’m rolled up, already lit. I got the five lines in front of me. I got the phones out right here. I got KD on one line, I got CP on one line. I got Steph on one line. And we catching up. This is the first time I think that all the old superstars can actually be on one team and go out with a hurrah.” KD said in the podcast Truth and Ticket.
That, however, is an unrealistic dream.Garnett says he wouldn’t be surprised if LeBron abandons his plan to play alongside his son in the NBA and retires. According to KG, after the Nuggets series, LeBron appeared tired and as if everything was weighing on him. Meanwhile, the rest of the league has become younger and more talented.
“I think because of where we are and where I think the league with youth, you got youth and experience, look at the Boston Celtics, they are youth and experience. And now I’m watching teams be geared up for that. Like Minnesota is built for the future, the Rockets are built for the future. Even the King is built for the future.” stated Garnett.
Garnett believes that the Lakers are not built for the future. The Purple and Gold lack young superstars who can guide them into the future. Sure, the Lakers have Anthony Davis, but even he is no longer a spring chicken. To attract young stars, the Lakers must first develop young players, which takes time. In a win-now mode, this is only possible through trades.
Pierce says the Lakers should eye Donovan Mitchell in a trade. The Lakers have long been linked to Dejounte Murray and even his backcourt partner Trae Young. However, KG’s former Celtics captain, Paul Pierce, recently suggested that the Lakers look into Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell.”If I’m the Lakers GM, you know who I’ll target… Donovan Mitchell!… Will be the perfect fit,” Pierce said in a previous interview. “Now you have a young Donovan Mitchell, you can pair with Anthony Davis, who needs to be the No. 2 guy on a championship team. And Donovan Mitchell would take so much pressure off LeBron if you gonna give him three years. Now your window is also open.
“Adding Donovan Mitchell to a team with Bron and AD sounds great. However, at what cost, if any, will he travel to Los Angeles? Last Friday, the Lakers fired their entire head coach, marking the start of their offseason. Who knows what other moves they might have up their sleeves? However, in order to compete in the tough Western Conference, the Lakers must upgrade their roster rather than simply adding new bench players.
