Despite Kevin Durant’s 31 points, Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves upset the Phoenix Suns 120-95 in the first game of their Western Conference first-round playoff series on Saturday.
Edwards dazzled for the home fans in Minnesota during the team’s opening victory of the current season vs Phoenix. He scored a game-high 33 points (14 of 24; 4 of 8 from outside the arc) while grabbing nine rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks.
When Edwards committed his last theft with 3:40 left in the game, it created the opportunity for an open-court slam that extended Minnesota’s lead to 18. Following that play, Suns head coach Frank Vogel benched his players, acknowledging the loss. For much of the game, the Suns were down, including a 27-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Bradley Beal (15 points) and Devin Booker (18 points) led the Suns in role players, while Royce O’Neale (14 points) and Jusuf Nurkic (nine points, four rebounds, three blocks, and two steals) led Phoenix. Grayson Allen (4 points, 5 rebounds) left the game in the third quarter because of an ankle injury.
The team’s sixth player, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, finished with 18 points and a game-high four steals off the bench, while Minnesota’s big man Rudy Gobert finished with a game-high 16 rebounds and 14 points. Naz Reid finished with 12 points.
The Suns and Timberwolves square off in Game 2 on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
This is the first postseason meeting for Phoenix’s Big 3 (Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, and Kevin Durant). All-Stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards, a dynamic player and front-runner for Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, are leading Minnesota.
