Mitchell has missed the majority of Cleveland’s schedule following the All-Star break due to a nagging knee issue and a fractured nose. In just ten games over that time, Mitchell hasn’t played like his typical self on the court, averaging just 18.1 points on 39.6% shooting, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists—all career lows.
Mitchell was unable to put in his best effort on the floor because to his knee and nasal fracture mask. But everything came together again in Wednesday’s 110-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, even though Mitchell neglected to put on his mask.
Mitchell admitted to ClutchPoints that he had forgotten about his mask. When the game started, I was like, ‘You know what?’ after I arrived. It’s excellent. Fuck it. Come on, let’s go.
Naturally, I receive a blow to the nose and the and-one at the end of the first quarter. It was then that I truly realized I hadn’t put it on. But it did include that. You know what I mean, the second part of the season has been interesting for me.
Whether wearing a mask or not, Mitchell appeared more like himself than his statistics during the All-Star break suggest. In 33 minutes of play, he finished with 29 points, four rebounds, and eight assists, making him the focal point of Cleveland’s comeback victory. It’s encouraging given how the Cavs and Mitchell have performed in the second half of the season, and more significantly, it’s another step toward Mitchell’s return to the top of the Eastern Conference’s player rankings.
Mitchell, in the words of Jarrett Allen, “makes it easier for all of us.” “He always scores a lot of points, so I know we can talk about his points.” However, his eight assists tonight were merely for passing the ball to others and maintaining the offensive momentum. It simply made everything simpler and involved everyone.
To Allen’s credit, Mitchell has contributed to the Cavs’ offense in a variety of ways other than just scoring baskets. His role as Cleveland’s playmaker has greatly changed, particularly in light of Darius Garland’s injury. Even though Mitchell’s persistent knee issue may prevent him from playing at full capacity every night, the Cavaliers should be encouraged by what he showed against the Grizzlies.
