Anthony Davis will miss the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Golden State Warriors due to the symptoms of a head injury sustained two days before.
Darvin Ham, the Lakers’ coach, said Davis was ruled out approximately 90 minutes before tipoff Tuesday night.
“He showed up to the arena trying to do everything he could to play, but just couldn’t overcome the headache and the nausea,” he added.
Davis was tested for a probable concussion but is not now part of the league’s concussion protocol, according to Ham.
Davis was smacked in the face near his eye in the last minute of the Lakers’ first-quarter defeat to Minnesota on Sunday night and did not return. The nine-time All-Star received the punch from Timberwolves’ Kyle Anderson in the same region where he was elbowed in the eye by Golden State’s Trayce Jackson-Davis during the Lakers’ March 16 defeat to the Warriors.
Davis’ absence is a huge issue for the ninth-place Lakers, who had won nine of their last 11 games into Sunday matchup with 10th-place Golden State. Los Angeles is 26-13 since the Christmas season, but has unable to move up even one position in the loaded Western Conference rankings.
Davis appeared in 74 games this season. That’s the most the nine-time All-Star has had in New Orleans since 2018, when he had finally enjoyed almost a complete season without big injury absences before being pushed out at the most critical moment of the regular season.
Davis averages 24.5 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks. He is the defensive anchor and top inside offensive threat for the Lakers, who are also without Christian Wood and Jarred Vanderbilt due to injuries.
