In a victory on Sunday, LeBron James accomplished something that he has done numerous times in his 21-year NBA career: he scored 40 points. But his route there was a little more recent. In the victory over the Brooklyn Nets, James made nine 3-pointers, tying a career-high, in just ten tries. With that, James’ season-long 3-point shooting percentage reached a career-high 41.6%, illustrating the growing realization that his advancing years have forced him to adapt his style of play. James will turn 40 next season.
The four-time MVP can no longer base his whole strategy on his superior physical prowess. This season, he has improved significantly as a jump shooter rather than making repeated trips to the hoop. James is choosing his spots more than he ever has, and as his illustrious career draws to a close, that tendency is probably going to persist. Additionally, he admitted that the finish is closer than it has ever been following Sunday’s 116-104 victory.
“I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure.” Said James. “Not a long time. As far as when I’ll retire, I have no idea when that door will close. However, my remaining time is limited.”
James may leave the Lakers after the season if he wants to, but sources indicate he will probably sign a three-year contract that pays him close to or at his maximum salary. He might be able to play with both of his sons under such a contract, as Bronny will be available for the draft this summer and Bryce in 2026. James would be covered by such a deal through the 2026–2027 campaign.
However, nothing is ever assured when your 40th birthday falls inside the same calendar year. Every athlete of that age needs to approach retirement year-by-year. For the time being, James is still an All-NBA player, and he has improved his game enough to be there for the foreseeable future. Yet physical deterioration might happen at any time. Injury is also possible. His record on this front isn’t exactly stellar, so those 3-pointers might cease falling. Three more years could pass. It might happen sooner. However, most of James’ illustrious career has already been witnessed. We should cherish masterpieces such as Sunday’s right now, as there won’t be many more in the future.
