Phoenix Suns’ standout Kevin Durant recently reflected on his ascent to the eighth position on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, surpassing the legendary Shaquille O’Neal in the process.
After the Suns secured a 115-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, Durant expressed his gratitude, stating that he feels honored to be mentioned alongside some of the greatest players in basketball history. Moving past O’Neal was described by Durant as “a major, major honor.”
“Just grateful to be in the category with some of the greatest. We all know what Shaq meant to the game of basketball. To be up there with him is a major, major honor.” – Kevin Durant
During the game, O’Neal himself congratulated Durant and playfully challenged him to aim for the top spot currently held by Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James. Durant’s contributions in the game against the Sixers included 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocks, contributing to the Suns’ triumph, despite Joel Embiid’s absence from the Sixers’ lineup.
“Well deserved. It doesn’t stop here… If anybody was gonna pass me, it was definitely gonna be you.” – Shaq said
While James’ position atop the scoring list appears unassailable for the foreseeable future, with a remarkable tally of 40,179 points and counting, Durant’s focus may shift towards surpassing other basketball legends.
He stands just 3,682 points behind Michael Jordan, who occupies the fifth position. With his exceptional scoring ability and assuming continued good health, Durant could potentially reach this milestone within the next two to three seasons.
As Durant continues to etch his name in NBA history, his pursuit of further milestones remains an intriguing storyline for basketball enthusiasts.
