Nike is set to release Kevin Durant’s 17th signature sneaker, the Nike KD 17, in April, despite the fact that Durant’s 16th signature shoe is less than nine months old.
The new KD 17 immediately draws attention for its resemblance to the iconic Air Max Plus, which first debuted in 1998. Designer Sean McDowell revealed that the wavy lines on the upper were inspired by palm trees silhouetted against a sunset.
The debut colorway of the KD 17 features orange and yellow gradient overlays on a white and yellow gradient base. A blue panel on the midsole adds contrast, featuring a repeating “KD” motif that resembles ripples on water.
The sneaker also includes iridescent “KD” tongue logo branding, “Kevin Durant” script on the heel counter, and a circle with the word “Easy” beneath it, referencing Durant’s “Easy Money Sniper” nickname.
The KD 17 is reported to include forefoot Zoom cushioning, a TPU shank, Cushlon midsole, and generative rubber outsole for performance. The decision to release the KD 17 so soon after its predecessor may be attributed to the lukewarm reception of the KD 16. Durant himself expressed some ambivalence towards the KD 16, acknowledging its status as the 16th installment without much excitement.
The Nike KD 17 is scheduled to release on April 12 through the Snkrs app and select third-party retailers, with a retail price set at $150.
