Kevin Durant Nears Historic Milestone in NBA Scoring Records
Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets is on the brink of making NBA history as he enters Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks needing just 20 points to surpass Shaquille O’Neal for eighth place on the league’s all-time scoring list.
Durant’s ascent in the scoring ranks has been nothing short of remarkable, characterized by a steady climb up the ladder over the past few seasons.
During the 2022-23 season, Durant began in Brooklyn ranked 21st all-time. By the season’s end in Phoenix, he had surpassed a slew of legendary names including Alex English, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, John Havlicek, Paul Pierce, Tim Duncan, Dominique Wilkins, and Oscar Robertson to secure the 13th spot.
In the subsequent 2023-24 season, his first full campaign with the Suns, Durant continued his upward trajectory, overtaking Hakeem Olajuwon, Elvin Hayes, Moses Malone, and Carmelo Anthony to secure the ninth position, leaving only O’Neal ahead of him.
Durant’s scoring prowess has been evident since his rookie year in Seattle at the tender age of 19, where he showcased his ability to fill up the basket, earning him Rookie of the Year honors with an average of 20.3 points per game. Since then, he has consistently maintained high scoring averages, winning four scoring titles along the way.
Despite facing setbacks due to injuries, including an Achilles tear, Durant’s scoring average has remained remarkably consistent, returning close to peak levels over the past three seasons.
What sets Durant apart as a scorer is his versatility across all facets of scoring. He excels both inside and outside the paint, demonstrating proficiency in finishing at the basket, pulling up in the midrange, and knocking down shots from beyond the arc.
With 9,808 field goals made (17th all-time), 1,995 3-pointers made (16th all-time), and 6,953 free throws made (10th all-time), Durant’s scoring resume speaks volumes about his prowess as a multifaceted scorer.
A true three-level scorer, Durant’s ability to score from anywhere on the court has propelled him up the ranks of the NBA’s all-time scoring list, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest scorers in league history.
