Luka Doncic’s Incredible 30-Point Triple-Double Streak Comes to an End in Thrilling Battle with Bulls

Superstar Luka Doncic of the Mavericks ended his historic streak of 30-point triple-doubles against the Bulls with a final game total of 27 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds.

Chicago Superstar Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks came into Monday’s 127-92 victory over the Chicago Bulls riding some unprecedented triple-double streaks. He finished with 27 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds for a triple-double, but the score was too lopsided for him to stay in and hit the 30- or 35-point mark to extend his triple-double run.

In his last game, Doncic helped lead the Mavericks to a 142-124 victory over the Detroit Pistons by collecting 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. This set the NBA record for the most consecutive 30-point triple-doubles (six).

Doncic and Kyrie Irving were on the court to start the fourth quarter, but the Mavs were ahead 98-64 at the halfway point. By this point in the game, Doncic had amassed 24 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds. He only needed to add six more points to his illustrious streak.

Doncic made it look easy to dismantle the Bulls’ defense, often dishing out passes to his athletic, rim-rolling big men while utilizing his wide range of scoring options to get to the desired areas on the court.

“The game has so many various aspects for him. Bulls coach Billy Donovan stated, “Not just himself, but his passing and his vision and manipulating defenses.” Therefore, it will require all five of the defenders to be extremely accurate.

“Whether it’s him in pick and roll or ‘iso’ [isolation] situations or post-ups, obviously any elite scorer generally does it by getting fouled and getting to the free-throw line,” Donovan said. “You have to be extremely disciplined when protecting him because he does that; he’s exceptionally good at making free throws for himself. Naturally, he is physically fit and strong. In addition to his ability to engage himself in the game, he also possesses a special talent for making it simple for others to play, whether it be by creating catch and shoot opportunities for players on the perimeter or by locating their big men on rolls for lobs. He clearly accomplishes a lot.

Early in the fourth quarter, Doncic scored 27 points after making a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer. There were six minutes left in regulation time when he finally left the game, missing many step-back 3-pointers that would have given him the chance to reach the milestone.

Doncic led Dallas to a 2-1 record while averaging 37.7 points, 10.7 assists, and 10.3 rebounds in games played between March 4 and March 10. He was selected the Western Conference Player of the Week for those games hours before the game.

The team as a whole and he himself had a terrific week, in my opinion. We’ve had our challenges, but it just demonstrates the team’s spirit and Luka Doncic’s leadership ability to play at the caliber he is,” Mavs head coach Jason Kidd said. “He’s had a great month in February, and now he’s won player of the week.”

In their upcoming game, the Mavs will make their one-game return to American Airlines Center on Wednesday night against the Golden State Warriors.
