Respect for Matthew Slater was shared by many others outside of the New England Patriots as well.
The former Patriots core special team member, who announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, was well regarded by players throughout the league, including those of the rival New York Jets.
By sharing a mic’d-up footage of Slater’s last game, the Patriots revealed more about it. Before and after New England’s 17-3 defeat, a number of Jets players, including Aaron Rodgers, congratulated the three-time Super Bowl winner.
Rodgers was first unaware that it was Slater’s farewell song when they conversed briefly before the competition. However, after learning it, Rodgers expressed his highest regard for Slater, and the star quarterback feels the legendary Patriot is headed to Canton.
In the video, Slater was also praised by offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson, wide receiver Randall Cobb, punter Thomas Morstead of the Jets, and cornerback Justin Hardee.
Slater has a compelling case to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Slater most definitely belongs there, in Bill Belichick’s opinion.
Slater was a standout member of the special teams and possesses longevity. He was selected twice for the All-Pro team and was named to the Pro Bowl ten times. His resume is further enhanced by the fact that he contributed to New England’s dynasty and helped win at the greatest levels.
While having the support of players like Aaron Rodgers and Brett Belichick would undoubtedly aid Slater’s case, everyone will have to wait until 2029 to find out whether he inducts with his father, Jackie, into the Hall of Fame.
