THE CITY OF SALT LAKE — On Thursday night, Klay Thompson made his first appearance off the bench since his rookie season. He went on to make seven three-pointers and score a season-high 35 points, which led the Golden State Warriors to a victory over the Utah Jazz by a score of 140-137.
For the first time since March 11, 2012, Thompson was a member of the reserve position. As a result of his replacement in the starting lineup, rookie guard Brandin Podziemski finished with 13 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
“You can do two things: You can pout or you can go out there and respond,” said Thompson, who became the sixth player in Golden State history to score more than 15,000 points. This evening, I felt that I did a really good job with the latter.
After having a conversation with Thompson on Thursday morning, Coach Steve Kerr informed him of the adjustment in the starting lineup. Thompson was shocked to hear the news. The fact that Thompson was unhappy with the decision was acknowledged by Kerr, and this was the driving force behind what turned out to be his best offensive performance throughout a season that was full of ups and downs.
“It’s been a tricky season for him and for us,” said Kerr, who made it to the 500th victory in his career as the coach of the Golden State Warriors. It is not as simple to accomplish what Klay succeeded in doing for him five or six years ago. I believe that this may be a wonderful way to strike a balance between getting the best out of Klay and getting the best out of our team.
For the Warriors, Draymond Green contributed a season-high 23 points to the team’s stat line. There were 19 points and seven rebounds contributed by Andrew Wiggins. With 16 points and 10 assists, Stephen Curry had a great game.
In spite of the fact that Thompson scored 17 points during the Warriors’ first half, which was 84 points, they were able to hold on for their eighth win in ten games thanks to a missed three-point shot by Collin Sexton.
After making 20 of 42 shots from beyond the arc, Golden State made at least 20 three-pointers against the Jazz for the second time in the past four days. The Warriors were able to circumvent 13 turnovers, which resulted in 29 points for Utah.
The Jazz were led by Sexton, who finished with 35 points and nine assists. The rookie Keyonte George added a career-high 33 points while also scoring a career-high nine three-pointers at the same time. Twenty points were scored by Lauri Markkanen, while John Collins finished with eighteen points. Each one of them had thirteen rebounds.
Even though they shot 22 of 49 from beyond the arc, Utah was unable to win their third consecutive home game and their fourth consecutive game overall.
After falling behind by 18 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Utah was able to get the game down to a single possession in the last two minutes of play. In the last minute of the game, Golden State’s lead was reduced to 138-137 thanks to a 13-2 rally that was fueled by two baskets apiece from Markkanen and Kenneth Sexton.
When there were 3.1 seconds remaining on the clock, Markkanen missed a corner three that could have been the game-winning shot, and Collins collected the offensive rebounds but then threw the ball away. Before Sexton missed a decent look on the final play, Curry converted two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining in the game as the clock ticked down.
Markkanen stated that it is always quite difficult to lose a close game. “Both as a group and on an individual level, we have a great deal of work to do.”
Twenty-nine three-point shots were made by Utah and Golden State combined in the first half of the game. The Jazz shot 14 of 28 from long range, while the Warriors were successful with 15 of their 26 attempts.
Over the course of the last three minutes of the first quarter, Thompson scored four baskets. After that, the Warriors completely grabbed control of the game in the second quarter.
During the quarter, Podeziemski scored 13 points, which contributed to Golden State’s push in front of the competition. During a 14-4 run, he and Curry both made three-pointers, which put the Warriors ahead by a score of 65-53.
In the second quarter, Golden State scored a total of 48 points, which was a season best for both the Warriors and an opponent from the Jazz.
Over the course of the third quarter, Thompson scored a total of 18 points, demonstrating his continued domination after the break. During a stretch of four minutes, he connected on five baskets, including four three-pointers, which contributed to Golden State’s ability to expand their advantage to 120-102 heading into the fourth quarter.
Will Hardy, the coach of the Jazz, stated that the defense simply did not have enough physicality for the bulk of the game we played. We were unable to catch up to Klay Thompson, particularly in the second half of the game. His choices were not easy to make.
