NEW YORK — The When Stephen Curry checked at the box score, it showed that he had made a three-point shot, but no other Warriors had.
In spite of the fact that it was not a very attractive victory, Golden State will take them in any way they can, given the challenging season they have been having. As the Warriors overcame a slow start to defeat the Brooklyn Nets by a score of 109-98 on Monday night, Curry scored 29 points, and Jonathan Kuminga added 28 points to the Warriors’ total.
At the beginning of this game, it appeared as though the Warriors had not yet regained their vigor after suffering a defeat in overtime on Saturday in Atlanta, despite the fact that Curry had scored 60 points and finished with 10 three-pointers. While being kept to 43 points in the first half, Golden State was only able to make two out of eleven three-point shots and made ten turnovers, which resulted in 15 points being scored against them.
Nevertheless, they were able to outscore the Nets by a score of 66-49 in the second half, despite the fact that Curry made all of his shots from beyond the arc, and he only made four of his twenty-two attempts.
“The game was ugly on both sides, but I believe that everyone was trying to execute and trying to settle into the style of the game. Thankfully, in the second half, we made the appropriate adjustments and took control of the game, and we never looked back,” Curry said.
Since beating Boston 108-88 on March 15, 2014, Golden State has not won a game when shooting less than 19% from three-point range. This was despite the fact that they went 5 for 28 (17.9%) from beyond the arc. This was the season before they won their first of four championships in eight years.
Kuminga accomplished the feat of reaching 20 points for the ninth time in his last ten games, while also grabbing ten rebounds. As the game came to a close, Draymond Green finished with eight points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Additionally, the Warriors had a 60-38 advantage in rebounding over the Nets and a 23-7 advantage in second-chance points.
Cam Thomas played for the Nets, who had won three of their previous four games, but he only shot four of his twenty-one shots. During a game against San Francisco in December, Thomas scored 41 points, which was the highest number of points that the Warriors have allowed this season.
Nic Claxton finished the game with 15 points and a career-high seven blocked shots before being disqualified in the fourth quarter for a flagrant foul committed against Brandin Podziemski, who finished with 11 rebounds and 15 points. On January 29, the Nets scored 147 points against Utah, then on Saturday, they scored 136 points while playing in Philadelphia. On the other hand, they did not even come close to reaching that level on Monday, shooting 38% and suffering ineffective performances from their leading scorer Mikal Bridges (5 for 15) and Spencer Dinwiddie (3 for 12).
Tonight, however, we had our opportunities. If we had taken care of the rebound piece, which is something that we will continue to challenge our guys with, that would have been a little slippage overall, according to the coach of the Nets, Jacque Vaughn. In the event that there is one area in which we have made some progress, it is unquestionably the rebounding component, and we require the participation of a number of athletes.
Ben Simmons did not play for the Nets since he was unable to play in the first game of a back-to-back. However, Simmons is slated to play with the Nets on Tuesday, when they will be hosting Dallas in Kyrie Irving’s return to Brooklyn.
Despite the fact that the Nets were only three for sixteen from three-point range in the first quarter, they still managed to take the lead, 23-20, thanks in large part to the fact that they scored 12 points off of seven turnovers committed by the Warriors. Golden State did not reach 30 points until more than midway through the second quarter, and they did not make a three-pointer until Curry made one with 4:29 remaining in the half, which was the 3,600th of his career.
At halftime, Brooklyn held a 49-43 lead over Golden State. However, Kuminga scored dunks on both of Golden State’s first two possessions of the third quarter, which appeared to loosen up the Warriors. As a result, the Warriors outscored the Nets 32-21 to take a 75-70 advantage into the fourth quarter.
According to Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Warriors, “Against that kind of switching defense, if you’re kind of jogging through stuff, it’s really easy to just switch and say in front.” It seemed to me that the first five minutes of the second half did a great job of establishing a positive tone. Our guys were far more skilled and more forceful when it came to the cuts.
The score was tied at four with three minutes and six seconds remaining, but Kuminga scored the next four points, and Curry then scored the next five points for Golden State, bringing the score to 105-94.
