There were 20 points scored by Caleb Love, 13 points scored by Pelle Larsson, and No. 12 Another victory for Arizona under the direction of coach Tommy Lloyd came on Wednesday night, when the team defeated USC by a score of 82-67.
In spite of the fact that they had just suffered a three-point defeat at the hands of Washington State, the Wildcats (13-4, 4-2 Pac-12) overcame a nearly seven-minute run in which they did not make a field goal to take a ten-point lead at the break and then extend that lead to 19 minutes into the second half.
However, Arizona was able to score 22 second-chance points off of 21 offensive rebounds despite having a second consecutive night of poor shooting performance, with a field goal percentage of only 40%. Despite having suffered a defeat under Lloyd, the Wildcats have a perfect record of 15-0 and have triumphed over USC at McKale Center in 13 of their last 14 matches.
At the time of their arrival in the desert, the Trojans (8-10, 2-5) were on a losing skid of two games and were missing their two leading scorers. The hand injury that Boogie Ellis sustained forced him to miss the second consecutive game, and Isaiah Collier, a freshman guard, underwent surgery on his hand the previous week.
Despite the fact that Arizona’s students jeered him every time he touched the ball, Bronny James made an effort to carry the Trojans to victory. He scored nine of his eleven points in the first half of the game.
After scoring two points on a combined 0-for-14 shooting performance in the previous three games, James scored five points and had six assists in his tenth game since returning from a cardiac arrest. James shot five for eleven and had six assists.
USC was led by DJ Rodman, who scored 16 points.
Before USC tripped them up by turning to zone, the Wildcats were off to a raging start and built up an early 10-point lead against the Trojans.
Arizona went nearly seven minutes without a field goal as the Trojans cut their lead to four points. This was due to the fact that Arizona was unable to get solid looks.
With a 7-0 run, the Wildcats were able to take a 45-35 lead late in the first half. This allowed them to find a bit of a rhythm.
At the beginning of the second half, USC was able to keep Arizona within striking distance. However, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to take a 64-46 leading. Following that, the Trojans were only able to get closer by ten points.
