Kevin Durant Opens Up on James Harden’s Departure from Nets’ Big Three
Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant shared candid thoughts on the dissolution of the Nets’ “big three” and the departure of former teammate James Harden during a recent interview. Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving were expected to form one of the most potent trios in NBA history, but injuries and other challenges limited their time together on the court.
Speaking after the matchup between Durant’s Phoenix Suns and Harden’s Los Angeles Clippers, Durant acknowledged feeling disappointed about the situation but expressed love and support for his longtime friend. Durant emphasized the bond they share as brothers and stated that he wants the best for Harden and his family moving forward.
Durant admitted to being “pissed” about the circumstances surrounding Harden’s departure but acknowledged the complexities of the NBA landscape. Despite the challenges, Durant highlighted the deep connection he shares with Harden, dating back to their time as teammates on the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“No doubt that I was pissed about the situation. I’m sure he was pissed about having to move teams again. When the smoke clears, you realize that’s somebody you came into the league with, somebody I really, really love as a brother. … I want what’s best for him and his family going forward,” Durant said of Harden, per Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.
The Nets’ big three experienced a tumultuous period, with injuries and other factors preventing them from realizing their full potential. While Durant, Harden, and Irving have since moved on to different teams, Durant’s sentiments reflect a mix of disappointment and understanding about the realities of the NBA.
As Harden joined the Clippers in a blockbuster trade during the 2023–24 season, and Irving re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks, each player has found new homes with promising opportunities for success. The trio’s time together on the Nets may be viewed through a lens of missed potential, but the individual paths of Durant, Harden, and Irving continue to unfold in different basketball landscapes.
