Stephen Curry does not put any pressure on his children to be athletes.
While speaking with PEOPLE about his partnership with Rakuten to highlight Black designers during the 2024 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors player, 35, also revealed that he is introducing his three children to a variety of sports at home.
“We’re all backyard sports right now,” says Curry, the father of Riley, 11, Ryan, 8, and Canon, 5. “Nothing is overly organized.” Canon, in particular, is only 5 years old. So we have plenty of time. He’s an all-around athlete. However, his attention span is comparable to that of a 5-year-old.”
“It’s more just confidence building and their ability to find joy in everything they do,” he said. “I think that’s a huge part of kids these days, not feeling too much pressure on having to be successful or keep up with their counterparts.”
“I’m just trying to make sure that whatever they do, they’re having fun,” he said. “There’s a lot thrown at them on a daily basis, as well as a lot of perceived pressures.” So I try to make sure they have fun being kids and find joy in everything they do.”
Curry has previously revealed that his oldest child, Riley, is already gravitating toward sports, telling PEOPLE that her drive is beginning to look familiar.
“I’ve pretty much introduced pretty much every sport, for the most part, to all of them,” Curry said in July. “And Riley, she’s super into volleyball right now, and a light bulb went off, actually this year, where she’s excited to go to practice and dribbling or passing the ball around the house and all that type of stuff.”
“So she’s found something she loves, and she’s passionate about it, and she loves to work at it.”
Curry’s wife Ayesha spoke about becoming a first-time mother at a young age in May 2021, explaining how difficult it was to figure out her career while raising her children.
“What I realized was that I was becoming this woman at such a young age when other people would still be in college or figuring out who they want to be,” she said on an episode of Skimm’d From The Couch.
She went on to say that, while she “thoroughly enjoyed being a mom,” she still hoped to do more. After starting a recipe blog, the young mom discovered her passion, which has since grown into an empire that includes multiple restaurants, cookbooks, and even a TV series. Ayesha’s children are already following in her footsteps; she previously revealed that her daughter Riley has “insane” culinary skills.
